A sound portrait composed of 20 (originally 25) audio snapshots from Shoeb's time at the Kochi AIR residency in 2016, 'surface.location' was initially released in a very limited edition of 10 handcrafted CDRs for the residency open day.

Designed to be played in loop, either in order or with the shuffle function enabled, this musique concréte style collage reveals the psycho-geography that inspired Shoeb during her stay in this unique part of India, using both field recordings from around the Fort Kochi locale and recorded sketches that feature analogue synths, electronic tanpura + tabla machines and effects units alongside a shruti box and collection of resonant 'balti' bowls purchased during the trip.

'surface.location' sits in Shoeb's catalogue as a more abstract companion to her installation/long-form composition work 'im/modesty' (written concurrently during this period) and now provides sonic inspiration for music written for her next releases in progress.
